Nyasa means to settle down. It is a way to balance what is happening inside and outside us:  balance the “body-mind”: to make the connection between the inner perceptions of the mind, the emotions we feel and the body presence.  It can help to center oneself and relax. When beginning the yoga practice, one can feel confused or divided. Despite the body being really present, the mind may be busy miles away, worrying about the past or about the future or even feeling difficult emotions as sorrow, fear, distress or other. The Nyasa activity is a way adding relaxation and concentration: it is a way of centering oneself and releasing tensions, by calmly resting and breathing. The yogi seats and rests, even if this is only for a few minutes. He can even lie down if he feels very tired. Take 15 minutes to relax…The yogi takes the time he needs to leave the worries behind, in a quiet atmosphere, and being fully present to him. He closes his eyes, observes his posture, feels his whole body. He may find some tense points to work out and relax during the practice, while he breathes deeply and slowly:  he relaxes face, jaws, shoulders, arms and legs. Once the mind is connected with the body the practice has begun.
